Softball Win Against Southern Virginia Highlights Three-Game Saturday

SALEM, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team wrapped up action in the Mountain Mash with a marathon three-game Saturday.

Pitt-Bradford started the day with a 3-2 victory over Southern Virginia.

Then, the Panthers battled with the two-time defending national champion Virginia Wesleyan and hung tough, but fell 6-2.

"We battled in three tough games today," Head Coach Tina Phillips said. "We learned a lot about ourselves and played great competition. That will help. So proud how we battled and hung to tough with two-time defending champs. Now to work on some things to get us ready for our Florida trip."

The Panthers wrapped up their season-opening trip with an 8-4 defeat to Roanoke.

Kerrigan Hoffmann tossed all seven innings to earn the win in game one.

The Panther offense overcame a first-inning two-run double with an RBI double from Grace Dadzaa and an RBI single from Betty Fratercangelo.

Liz Dzurisin later broke a 2-2 tie knocking in Mackenzie Bonyak in the top of the sixth.

Hoffmann worked one of her five strikeouts as part of a clean inning and the Panthers picked up their first win of the season.

Against Virginia Wesleyan, Maeghan Wynn scored Dzurisin and Maddy Hillery on a single to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead.

But Virginia Wesleyan would get the runs back and hold on for the win.

Melanie Davis made her first career start in the circle for the Panthers, dealing all six innings.

In the third game against Roanoke, the Panthers scored all four of their runs in the top of the first highlighted by a two-run single from Melissa Nye

But one in the bottom of the first, three in the second and two each in the fourth and sixth for Roanoke would prove to be enough for the victory.

Jordan Uhing tossed all six innings and struck out four along the way.

Dadzaa had three hits in the contest and the Panthers left 10 runners stranded.

Up next, Pitt-Bradford will play 10 games in Fort Myers, Fla., from March 12-17.
