SALEM, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team opened its 2019 season competing in the Mountain Mash Friday, falling to Frostburg State 6-3.
The Panthers were originally scheduled to play two games Friday but will now play three Saturday because of poor weather.
"Decent effort for our first time out of the gym," Head Coach Tina Phillips said. "We hit well, but had a few errors in the infield that hurt. Jordan just had one bad inning, but otherwise gave us a strong outing. We left runners in scoring position in first two innings, which we need to capitalize better on as we move forward in the season. But a lot of positives."
Maddy Hillery and Gabby Carpenter recorded three hits apiece and Liz Dzurisin dropped in a pair of base knocks to lead a 12-hit Panther offensive showing.
Jordan Uhing threw all six innings in the circle for Pitt-Bradford, striking out three and surrendering just six hits.
But, Pitt-Bradford left 10 baserunners stranded while Frostburg State left six.
Pitt-Bradford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning as Lindsey Hull singled home Hannah Lathrop and Sophia Fratercangelo later scored on a Frostburg error.
Frostburg answered with a big five-run bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run double and a two-run homer.
The Panthers got one back in the fourth as Dzurisin ripped a double that scored Hillery.
But Frostburg would get the run back in the fifth and eventually hold on for the 6-3 win.
Saturday's three-game slate will begin at 12 p.m. against Southern Virginia, continue at 2 p.m. against two-time defending champion Virginia Wesleyan and conclude at 4 p.m. against the host Roanoke.
