BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Medaille took both sides of a doubleheader hosting the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team Sunday afternoon on the campus of D'Youville College.
"Two tough ones today," Head Coach Tina Phillips said. " We just never got much going offensively. When we're not scoring runs, we have to make the basic plays, which we didn't do. It really hurt us in the first game. Morgan pitched well, but we came up short. A few hitters that we rely on had off days. But it was nice to see Maddy, Liz and Natalie come around with some good at-bats today. We just now have to buckle down with finals and get back at it at end of the week."
Pitt-Bradford could not overcome a three-run first inning from Medaille as the Mavericks held off the Panthers and eventually took the 4-3 victory.
In game two, the Panthers earned just three hits and failed to score as Medaille captured the 5-0 win.
Maddy Hillery led the Panthers offensively with two hits in each game, accounting for two of the three total Pitt-Bradford base hits in the second game.
Liz Dzurisin went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first game. Natalie Harding worked a hit in each game.
Morgan Bellush started in the circle in game one and tossed all six innings, striking out five.
Jordan Uhing was game two's starter and went five innings while striking out four.
Pitt-Bradford is now 11-15 overall and 3-7 in AMCC action.
Game One: Medaille 4, Pitt-Bradford 3
The Mavericks got their big hit in the bottom of the first, taking a quick 3-0 lead with a bases-clearing triple.
The Panthers got one back in the second as Dzurisin knocked home Hillery with an RBI single.
Medaille went ahead 4-1 as a leadoff double came into score on a Panther error.
Pitt-Bradford cut Medaille's lead in half in the fourth as Dzurisin once again singled home Hillery.
Melissa Nye later sent home Betty Fratercangelo with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to cut it to one run.
But Pitt-Bradford was sent down in order in the sixth and seventh, as Medaille held on for the 4-3 win.
Medaille's Laura Kratzke struck out 11 Panthers in the circle and walked none.
Pitt-Bradford was successful in its lone steal attempt as Grace Dadzaa swiped a bag.
Game Two: Medaille 5, Pitt-Bradford 0
Like game one, the Mavericks grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first, this time a two-run single.
The Panthers minimized the damage in the inning as a leadoff triple was thrown out at home on the next play for the first out of the inning.
Pitt-Bradford's first hit of the ballgame came in the top of the fourth as Hillery singled with one out.
Gabby Carpenter later reached on an error, putting two on with two outs. But a Panther strikeout ended the threat.
The Mavericks then doubled their lead with another two-run single in the bottom of the frame.
A solo home run for Medaille in the fifth brought the lead to 5-0.
Pitt-Bradford threatened once more in the sixth as Harding and Hillery struck together base knocks, but a groundout and a strikeout left them both stranded.
The Panthers went quietly in the seventh and Medaille held on for the shutout victory.
In relief of Uhing, Samantha Hribal worked the final three outs for the Panthers, striking out one.
Pitt-Bradford will be off until Saturday, April 28, to focus on final exams. The Panthers will travel to La Roche for a doubleheader.
