Pitt-Bradford softball swept Wheelock and Rivier Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Colleigate Classic in Naples, Florida, to push its winning streak to three games. The Panthers defeated Wheelock 13-2 and downed Rivier 5-2.
A total of eight different Panthers recorded a hit in the team's run-rule shortened win against Wheelock. The Wildcats issued 11 free passes and committed four errors to aid Pitt-Bradford's offensive outburst.
Pitt-Bradford scored on wild pitches in the first two innings to build a 2-0 lead, and Betty Fratercangelo and Jenna Hicks each drove in a run during the four-run third. The Panthers would tack on seven more runs in the final two frames.
Cassidy Lewis went the distance, allowing a pair of earned runs, on four hits. She struck out six and did not walk a batter. Grace Dadzaa led the Panthers at the plate with two hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases.
Sam Hribal displayed much better poise and command in her second career start, tossing a complete-game four hitter to beat Rivier.
Her only mistakes were a run-scoring double in the second inning and a two-out solo home run in the fourth. She worked around a base runner in the fifth and retired the last seven Raiders in a row. The freshman walked one and struck out five.
Liz Dzurisin opened the scoring with a RBI groundout in the bottom of the first inning, and Chelsey Henry followed with a run-scoring hit up the middle, staking the Panthers to a 2-0 lead.
Madison East doubled with one out in the third and scored on Dzurisin's base hit. Jenna Fellows stretched the lead to 4-2 in the fourth with a RBI hit, and in the fifth, Lindsey Hull plated Dzurisin, who led off with a ground-rule double, with her second hit of the game.
Five different Panthers each recorded two hits apiece, part of a 12-hit afternoon for the Blue and Gold. Dadzaa saw her streak of reaching base in eight straight at bats snapped in the sixth inning with a groundout to the shortstop.
Pitt-Bradford improves to 3-3 on the season and will resume play Friday against Edgewood and Albion.
