Solid Pitching, Timely Hitting, Lead Panthers to Sweep over Hilbert

BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team (6-17, 2-5) got back on track, breaking a nine-game losing streak, by sweeping Hilbert (4-13, 0-5) in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Kessel Athletic Complex.

The Panthers and Hawks were originally scheduled to play in Buffalo, but the game was moved to Bradford due to unplayable field conditions at Hilbert. The Panthers served as the away team in both games.

Pitt-Bradford won the opener, 4-1, and then shutout the Hawks, 4-0, in the finale to complete the sweep.

"It was great to finally get back in the win column," said Pitt-Bradford head coach Tina Phillips. "We played great defensively today and Cassidy and Liz gave us quality starts. They worked ahead and didn't give up many solid hits."

Meagan Hillard led the Panthers in the opener, going 2-2 with two RBI. Nicole Nolte added two hits while Maddy Hillery and Cassidy Lewis drove in one run each in the victory. Lewis was also dominant in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three in a complete game effort.

"Meagan's double was the boost we needed in the first game and Emily and Jenna had some great at bats for us in the second game," Phillips said. "Nicole and Maddy also hit the ball hard today. Now we just have to keep it rolling."

Hillard gave the Panthers all the offense they would need with a two-run double to centerfield, plating Nolte and Liz Dzurisin, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Pitt-Bradford picked up another run in the top of the sixth on Lewis' RBI groundout to second, scoring Alexis Wooden from third.

Hillery then extended the Panther's lead to 4-0 with an RBI single through the left side in the top of the seventh.

Hilbert picked up their lone run of the game on a Morgan Grosch RBI triple in the home half. However, the Hawks couldn't plate another run and the Panthers emerged with the 4-1 victory in the opener.

Liz Dzurisin shined for the Panthers in the nightcap, picking up her first collegiate victory, allowing just six hits while striking out two in a complete game effort in the circle.

Emily Fair led the Pitt-Bradford offense with two hits and three RBI while Jenna Dean, Grace Dadzaa and Hillery added two hits each. Hillery and Fox added one hit a piece in the game two victory.

The Panthers first run came, as Fox scored on a passed ball in the top of the first.

Fair then extended the Pitt-Bradford lead to 3-0 with a two-run double to left center in the top of the fourth. She then drove in the Panther's final run with single to right in the top of the sixth.

The Panthers were terrific defensively all day, as they didn't commit an error in either game.

Pitt-Bradford gets right back at it on Thursday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader with Alfred State. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. from the Kessel Athletic Complex.
