Spartans Top Panthers 10-2, Game Two Rained Out

Spartans Top Panthers 10-2, Game Two Rained Out

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team (4-17, 0-5) fell, 10-2, at D'Youville (9-6, 5-0) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in Buffalo.

The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but due to the torrential downpours, game two was postponed and will be made up at a later day.

"It was a better game than the score showed," said Pitt-Bradford head coach Tina Phillips. "I liked our approach at the plate against the top pitcher in the conference. We just hurt ourselves early and then playing in hail, sleet and rain the last two innings just put it out of hand for us."

Nicole Nolte led the Panthers at the plate, going 1-3 with an RBI single. Meagan Hillard and Emily Fair had one hit each while Amber Fox, Liz Dzurisin and Grace Dadazaa drew a walk in the loss. Taylor Collins took the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two and walking three.

Lydia Monin, Darian Evans, Hannah Turek and Victoria Purucker drove in two runs each to pace the Spartan's offense. Kalie McHenry allowed two runs, none of them earned, while striking out one and walking four to improve to 9-3 in the circle.

Despite dropping the game, the Panthers struck first in the game on Nolte's RBI infield single.

However, D'Youville answered with three runs in the home half, taking a 3-1 lead after one inning of play. The Spartans first run came on an error and Purucker and Kehlenbeck added RBI singles later in the inning.

Pitt-Bradford made it a one-run game when Hillard scored from third on a passed ball, after singling earlier in the inning.

D'Youville's offense heated up with two runs in the fourth, before ending the game with a five-run fifth to take an eight-run lead and a 10-2 victory in five innings.

The Panthers are scheduled to return to action Thursday afternoon for a doubleheader with Alfred State beginning at three at the Kessel Athletic Complex.
