Panthers edged by Saxons 2-0

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford men's soccer team struggled to find its offense during a physical match with the Alfred Saxons on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the Kessel Athletic Complex. As a result, the Panthers dropped the contest 2-0.

On a hot and sunny afternoon at the KAC, Pitt-Bradford (0-3) stayed strong in its defensive backfield, allowing just two goals on 18 total shots by Alfred (2-1). However, the Panthers' five shots would not be enough to start a rally.

The two squads battled it out on the grass for 90 minutes, accumulating a total of 37 fouls throughout the match. The Panthers continuously moved the ball into the Saxons' end of the field but never left with anything to show for it.

It remained neck-and-neck for much of the first period when Alfred's Richard Lander scored on a bender from outside the box at the 37-minute mark. That goal carried the two teams to halftime with the Panthers trailing 1-0.

As the second half began, both teams picked up right where they left off in the first. The play on the field mirrored much of what was seen in the first 45 minutes with drives stalling one after the other in the opponent's backfield.

With 70:02 ticked off the clock, Alfred's Jeff Thomas sent a pass across the box that eventually landed in the net off the forehead of Omar Mohamed. The goal gave the Saxons a two point advantage and sealed the victory for the visiting team.

Pitt-Bradford dropped its third straight contest to begin the 2014 season. The Panthers return to action on Friday, Sept. 5 as they travel to face Saint Vincent. First touch is set for 1:30 p.m. in Latrobe, Pa.
