Pitt-Bradford struggles down the stretch and falls to Medaille, 80-71

Bradford, Pa. - The Pitt-Bradford men's basketball team dropped its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game in the last six outings to the Medaille Mavericks, 80-71.

Junior Eric Matheson and senior Tyler Fantaskey led the way for the Panthers as each tallied 21 points in the loss to Medaille. Fantaskey also added seven rebounds to his totals.

Medaille (9-5, 7-2) managed to bury the first four points of the contest before the Panthers got on the board with a three pointer from senior Hiree Peoples. The Mavericks then strung together seven points to open their lead to 18-7.

The Panthers didn't back down however, as a rally from the home team put Pitt-Bradford (9-7, 6-3) back in the contest with a Fantaskey three pointer at the 5:55 mark to tie the game at 25 points.

Pitt-Bradford outscored Medaille in the first half 41-39 while shooting 41.7 percent from the floor. The Mavericks entered the locker room shooting 45.2 percent.

Second period action opened much like the first period ended. Pitt-Bradford and Medaille exchanged shots continuously before a Mavericks' run with 7:27 to play.

A last dash effort to cut into its deficit left Pitt-Bradford empty handed as the Mavericks iced the game at the free-throw line in the final minutes of action. The clock expired on a slow moving final minute and the Panthers dropped just their third AMCC contest of the season.

For the game, Pitt-Bradford shot 40 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from behind the arc. The Panthers were 10-of-15 from the line.

Medaille finished its night 44.8 percent from the floor and connected on 7-of-18 three's. The Mavericks were 21-of-29 from the stripe.

The Panthers are back in action at the KOA Arena on Saturday, Jan. 24. Pitt-Bradford welcomes the Franciscan Barons for a 3 p.m. tip.
