Pitt-Bradford Baseball To Open AMCC Play Against Alfred State At Houghton Wednesday

BRADFORD, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team will play its first game in nine days as it opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action with a doubleheader against Alfred State Wednesday at Houghton College.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be a true home game for Alfred State, but winter weather forced the game to be moved to the turf Kerr-Pegula Athletics Complex baseball facility at Houghton.

Houghton has been familiar territory for the Panthers so far this season as the Panthers have already played three contests at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex in 2018. On Feb. 28, they defeated D'Youville, 16-4, and played a doubleheader against the Houghton Highlanders in their most recent action last Monday.

Pitt-Bradford began the season winning its first four games and came out of its trip to Florida with a 5-3 mark overall -- including a matchup with Baldwin Wallace, which is the No. 18 team in the most recent D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 Poll.

The Panthers then split a doubleheader at Wilmington (Ohio) on March 18 before its most recent action at Houghton last Monday, totaling an even 6-6 record overall.

Pitt-Bradford owns one of the top offenses in the country, averaging 8.8 runs per game, which is the 26th-best average in NCAA Division III. Additionally, the Panthers reach base more than just about every team in the country, ranking 18th nationally with a team on-base percentage of .438.

As a team, the Panthers hit .320 (66th nationally) and are tied for 40th in the nation with 2.33 doubles per game.

Individually, the Panthers have some of the best bats in the AMCC. Sawyer Packard is tied for the conference lead with 16 RBIs, while Dalton Renn is tied for second with three home runs.

The Panther leadoff hitter Tyler Hoops owns the top on-base percentage in the conference at .600, which ranks 24th nationally. Hoops is also the fourth-leading hitter in the AMCC with a .455 batting average.

Austin Parent is a close second in the conference to Hoops in on-base percentage at .596. He is also the fifth-leading hitter in the AMCC with a batting average of .439.

On the mound, the Panthers are led by Ryan Boyer -- who has already been named the AMCC's Pitcher of the Week twice this season. Boyer holds a 2-1 record and is tied for the AMCC lead with a 2.08 ERA while striking out the second-most batters faced in the conference at 31. In 21.2 innings pitched so far this season, he has the second-best strikeouts per game average in the AMCC at 12.88.

Wednesday's doubleheader with the Panthers will be Alfred State's first conference games playing the AMCC in the program's history. The Pioneers enter Wednesday with a 5-11 overall record having lost their first eight games of the season but have since won four straight.

The Pioneers are led by Connor Pingitore, who holds a team-best .333 batting average. David Zuber leads the squad with 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored. On the mound, Matt Isham has tossed 22 innings in four appearances and three starts. Lucas Cornell has pitched 18.2 innings and leads the team with 27 strikeouts.

Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m. with game two beginning around 1:30 p.m.
