Panthers split with Lions in AMCC doubleheader

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford baseball team traveled to Altoona and split with the Lions in the doubleheader.

Penn State Altoona jumped out to an early lead against the Panthers after a three -run first inning as the Lions strung together three hits in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The game went scoreless for the next two innings until Pitt-Bradford struck in the top of the fourth after freshman Jay Clinger (Edinboro/Northwestern) brought home a run with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 4-1.

Altoona got the run back in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single brought the lead up to 4-1 in favor of the Lions.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the fifth and was able to get three runs out of it after an RBI from senior Ethan Showers (Hughesville/Hughesville) and two errors by the Lions made the score 4-4.

Altoona put one up in the fifth after an RBI single to put them back on top until the Panthers senior Connor Borowski belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to give the Panthers a 6-5 lead.

After the Panthers took the lead with a homerun, the Lions would strike back as they loaded the bases up and cleared them with one swing of the bat as the Lions would hit a grandslam home run as they went on to beat the Panthers 9-6.

Game two started off with the Panthers getting on top early as Borowski got them on the board early with a solo home run in the second to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Pitt-Bradford struck again in the third after senior Kody Johnston (Homerville, GA/Clinch County) doubled home two Panthers and then come home on an error later in the inning to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead after three innings.

Altoona finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after a base hit brought home a Lion to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Panthers then exploded in the fifth for nine runs with RBIs from freshman Jean Turber (Northumberland/Shikellemy), Showers, sophomore Matt Sompel (Scranton/Scranton) and Clinger to put the Panthers in front 13-1.

After being down big, the Lions posted five runs in the sixth highlighted by another grandslam for the Lion's offense to cut the lead down to 13-5.

The Lions weren't done as they put up three more in the seventh to bring the lead down to 13-8.

With the Lions threatening, The Panthers went on to put up two more in the eighth and six in the ninth as the offense came alive for the Panthers in this game as they go on to beat Altoona in game two, 21-9.

The Panthers will take the field next as they host Medaille on April 14 at 1 p.m.
