Panthers close out sweep against Hilbert, 11-8.

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford baseball team finished their makeup game with Hilbert College and beat the Hawks 11-8 Monday.

Pitt-Bradford jumped out to an early lead over the Hawks as they scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning after two wild pitches for the Hawks led to Pitt-Bradford getting the first two runs of the game.

Shaky defense by Hilbert led to the Panthers getting their third run of the game as an error led to freshman Jay Clinger (Edinboro/Northwestern) coming home to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead after the third inning.

Pitt-Bradford scored in three straight innings as they posted two more runs in the fourth after Clinger lined a single to right field to bring home sophomore Matt Sompel (Scranton/Scranton Prep) and senior Ethan Lear (Glen Rock/Susquehannock) to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

Hilbert came roaring back in the sixth inning as they posted six runs highlighted by a pinch hit three run home run by Tyler Shaw to tie the game up at 6-6.

The Panthers answered in their very next at bats with RBIs from Clinger, senior Ethan Showers (Hughesville/Hughesville) and freshman Jean Turber (Northumberland/Shikellemy) to give the Panthers an 11-6 lead after six innings.

Hilbert posted two more in the eighth but it was not enough as the Panthers were able to close out the sweep against Hilbert College.

Pitt-Bradford head coach Bret Butler said, "Wasn't a pretty game, but a hard fought, scrappy win. We gave up six In one inning; we need to cut that down to two. But if we stay scrappy, and fight for all nine innings of every game, we can be a tough foe. I am proud of them; we are getting better and scrappier every inning."

The Panthers will take the field next as they host Alfred State on April 7 at 4 p.m.
